Once you open a product it’s shelf life will begin to decline. For some products this means they will no longer be effective but others could cause irritation to your skin.

Every skincare product will have different expiry dates. some, like sunscreen, will have an exact expiry date whereas others will have a “period after opening” symbol (pictured below). Inside that symbol it will have a number and that number indicates how many months you can use it for once you’ve opened the product. With period after opening expiries I’d highly recommend writing the date you opened the product so you can easily keep track of when it has expired.

If your skincare product doesn’t have an expiry date on it you'll have to take matters into your own hands to figure out if the product you’re using is expired or not. According to dermatologists the 2 things to look out for include: changes to the consistency of the product, as well as differences in colour and overall appearance. So for example, if your moisturisers is usually white and thick and it starts to look yellow or have a watery texture then it’s time to chuck it in the bin.
